Beach info & safety

Beach flags

Supervised bathing, no particular danger.
Supervised bathing, limited danger. Caution advised.
Swimming prohibited.
Pollution or jellyfish. Ask at the lifeguard station.

Beaches in Capbreton and Hossegor are supervised in season (mid-June to mid-September). Always swim between the red and yellow flags.

Beware of rip currents (baïnes)

Baïnes are pools of water formed between sandbars. They look like calm, natural swimming pools but hide powerful currents that can sweep you out to sea. This is the main danger on the Landes coast.

What to do if caught in a rip current?

  • Do not fight the current
  • Float to conserve your energy
  • Swim parallel to the beach to escape the current
  • Signal for help and call out to lifeguards
